The Gardens

These 2-acre wooded gardens lie between Learmonth Gardens and South Learmonth Gardens in Edinburgh.

Trees

We have 66 trees in the Gardens and are lucky enough to have three of the oldest and largest Wych Elms in Edinburgh.

All our trees are protected by a Tree Preservation Order, which means that we must seek permission from Edinburgh Council before any tree works can commence. We are currently following an active tree maintenance schedule.

Shrubberies

The sloped banks on the south side of the Gardens have been planted with a variety of evergreen and deciduous shrubs, bulbs and flowering species.

Stumpery and wildlife area

We used some of the felled trees to create a stumpery feature, which will act as a rich wildlife habitat. Inspired by Victorian gardens in the 19th Century when ferns were grown amongst tree stumps, stumperies are ideal for shade-loving plants.
We have also created a wildlife area that will provide vital shelter for a number of species, such as hedgehogs, mice and voles.

North hedge

The north hedge sustained significant damage as a result of cutting to accommodate road works in 2018. Remedial pruning has been carried out to encourage new growth. A 0.5m hedge maintenance zone has been created to protect the hedge. Please do not park in this area.

Wych Elm

Unfortunately one of our majestic Wych Elms had to be removed in 2020 due to white-rot in the middle stem.
